A Symbol of Self-Determination. In a world where landlessness was designed as a type of control, the belongings house subverted the system. It used autonomy without consent. It made the poorest individuals in Barbados into house owners-- by themselves terms, in structures constructed with skill, pride, and communal labour.
When a household saved sufficient money to purchase land, the house would travel with them-- lifted, balanced, and brought like a treasure. Neighbours got here with ropes, lever boards, and laughter. Children ran beside the procession. Elders blessed the path with a peaceful nod.
" This is what you need to understand," he said. "We didn't wait on no one to hand us identity. We develop it board by board."
And because simple truth lies the depth of the Barbadian spirit.
