Barbados Wooden Chattel Homes

The Elder's Last Word. The old man increased slowly, dusting sand from his trousers. He turned towards the little wood house as though looking at an old friend.
" One day," he stated, "people gon' forget what this house really imply. They gon' think it was simply pretty wood and brilliant paint. But you-- you compose the story now. Make certain they keep in mind.".
He paused, letting the sea-grape leaves rustle in the stillness.
" This home is we. All the shifting, all the making it through, all the dreams we leave and carry from one place to the next. When you understand that, you understand Barbados.".
And with that, he walked away-- slow, stable, unhurried-- like a guy who brought his own home inside him.
This story becomes part of the deeper cultural journey checked out in Rogues in Paradise and the RoguesCulture Identity Series.

If you 'd like to explore more stories like this-- stories of resilience, humour, disobedience, and belonging-- you're welcomed to the early pre-screening of the work that began it all.

Based upon: Rogues in Paradise.
