Barbados Identity: The Story of the Chattel House

The Elder's Last Word. The old man rose gradually, cleaning sand from his trousers. He turned toward the little wood home as though taking a look at an old good friend.
" One day," he said, "individuals gon' forget what this house truly suggest. They gon' believe it was simply quite wood and intense paint. However you-- you write the story now. Ensure they keep in mind.".
He paused, letting the sea-grape leaves rustle in the stillness.
" This home is we. All the shifting, all the surviving, all the dreams we pack up and bring from one place to the next. When you comprehend that, you understand Barbados.".
And with that, he walked away-- slow, stable, calm-- like a guy who brought his own house inside him.
This story belongs to the deeper cultural journey explored in Rogues in Paradise and the RoguesCulture Identity Series.

If you 'd like to explore more stories like this-- stories of durability, humour, rebellion, and belonging-- you're invited to the early pre-screening of the work that started all of it.
