THINGS TO REMEMBER WHEN BUILDING A CUSTOM HOME

There are many things to consider for custom built homes. Are you tired of worrying about the details? Are you worried that you might forget something? Meadowlark has your back. The home-building process should be enjoyable and fun. That is why we recommend that you work with a builder who can keep track of all the details. It’s helpful to have a checklist of important items to remember so that you are able to rest assured. You can check off even the smallest items by making a list of 10 things that are often overlooked when building a house.

LIGHT SWITCHES & POWER OUTLETS

It is easy to overlook the importance of power outlets and light switches when building a house. This is a small detail that can have a big impact on your day. It’s important to consider where the light switches should be located when you plan your home. Do you have the ability to turn on the lights before entering a room? Do you have enough light for small spaces like the kitchen pantry?

The same logic applies to power outlets. Make sure you have a place to charge your phone, such as a nightstand near your bed. There are a few other places outlets can be found, but they are often overlooked:

  • Kitchen countertops for appliances such as toasters, coffee makers, and stand mixers
  • Bathrooms for electric toothbrushes, hair dryers, curling irons and straighteners.
  • Outdoor lighting for landscaping and holiday decoration
  • Living rooms are ideal for TVs, lamps and charging devices.
  • Garages for powering your outdoor tools
  • Basement for a workshop
  • Home offices for internet connection, routers, charging station, and other electronics

KITCHEN CABINET LIGHTING

You can see what you are doing in your kitchen, which makes it more efficient. Myrtle Beach custom home builders can add lights to your kitchen cabinets for the necessary lighting. The addition of lights above the kitchen cabinets can give your kitchen some dimension and make it more vibrant, even in the darkest days.

TELEVISION LOCATIONS

It’s easy to forget to place a TV in a living room. Although most people want a TV in their living room, or den, it might not be the focal point of the room. You don’t have to stick it on the top of your mantle or in a corner, but think about where you want your TV to be placed. Make sure that you have the right outlets and power connections.

SHOWER HEAD HIGH

You might consider installing the showerhead fitting slightly higher than the standard if anyone in your house is more than 6ft tall. The showerhead you select will hang approximately 3 inches below the fitting. This is something to consider when designing and building your shower. Remember, sometimes two showerheads are better than one!

RECESSED BATHROOM STOCKAGE

You have the unique opportunity to design your home from scratch, rather than retrofitting an existing home to fit your needs. It’s worth it! When you build, it’s simple to install a recessed bathroom cabinet or toiletry box in the shower. These tiny compartments can be inserted right between the studs of your walls. This small addition can greatly increase bathroom storage.

INTERNET & ELECTRONICS

Many people don’t realize the importance of installing key electronic systems such as your internet and sound systems. A hardline system is essential if you are a music lover or an avid internet user. It’s also the easiest to install while you build. You will have full control over router placement, signal booster location, and where to place recessed speakers. Although wireless internet and sound systems are possible, some people prefer the high quality of a hardline system. While you are still building, make sure to consider both.

It’s easy to lose sight of all the small details that make a big difference in your day when you have to deal with so many home choices. Did you ever try to stack pots and pans correctly only for them to all crash out of a cabinet or drawer?

You have the opportunity to improve your kitchen organization with cabinet features that allow for easy, efficient storage for your new home construction. Consider elements such as deep drawers that can store cooking pots, soft close drawers to prevent wear and tear, or custom cabinetry options like a pull out spice rack or specialty lift shelf for heavy stand mixers. These features will make your kitchen more efficient and help you to be successful when you move in.

OUTDOOR CONVENIENCES

It takes a lot of attention to build a home. It is easy to get distracted by the inside details and neglect what’s happening outside. It is easy to forget about simple outdoor conveniences like a porch ceiling fan, a deck speaker, and lighting outlets. Think about how you will use your deck or porch, then ensure you have all the necessary features and power you need.

LAUNDRY ROOM UTILITY

Although the laundry room may not be the most exciting area of your new home it can work well for you. It is easy to forget how often you use this space in your home. This can lead to problems in the layout. It’s a good idea to have a larger than usual counter in your laundry room for folding clothes and storing extra towels. Some people like to have a second sink in their laundry room. They also prefer deep shelving or a hanging rack to dry the clothes.

EXTRA MATERIALS

Last but not least, ask your builder to add a few more of the most valuable materials to your home. You can save a lot of money by keeping the remnants of tile, grout, wallpaper and trim. Even if you don’t have enough material for a repair you will still have a label with your manufacturer’s name or a small sample that you can take to a hardware shop to match. Most builders will provide you with a complete list of the choices, finishes, and colors used in your home after the project is completed.
