In the last year, the business has experienced more allocations than I have seen during my thirty years experience. In the past I have seen sharp price increases, and I have experienced several shortages, and delivery issues caused by material allocations through plastic resin companies. This is the very first time I have seen all these issues at one time.
Polytetraflouroethylene (TFE) and Kynar are both on allocation.
This pair of resins are in short supply. The PTFE Sheeting product PTFE (TFE) and Kynar-PVDF manufacturing requires a mineral called Fluorspar that's mined in Mongolia and China. The world interest in this mineral has increased significantly, along with the supply has tightened. PTFE materials have high temperature resistance, excellent chemical resistance and incredibly low co-efficient of friction (slippery) and is used within a bunch of purposes from non-stick fry cookware to ptfe tape for home use. This particular mineral is actually a crucial raw material in the manufacturing of fluoropolymers, fluorolubricants and several refrigerants. This increasing amount of demand combined with shortage of raw materials has caused a dramatic price increase (almost double throughout the last year), shortages, and we expect these two factors to stay in affect in the near future.
